Public toilets in Soham reopen

The public toilets in Soham have been re-opened.

East Cambridgeshire District Council made the difficult decision to temporarily close the toilets on Fountain Lane in March following a spate of mindless vandalism which culminated in a cleaner being verbally threated by a gang of youths.

Since then it has been working in partnership with Soham Town Council, the police and the East Cambridgeshire Community Safety Partnership to put new safety measures in place to protect the public and its staff.

These include upgrading the CCTV in the area which is monitored by the police and issuing the cleaner with a body camera.

Lis Every, who chairs the Community Safety Partnership, said: “These toilets provide a vital resource to people who live and visit Soham. We were pleased to be able to support the installation of CCTV thanks to a £1500 grant from the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner and we are confident the new measures will help address this senseless issue once and for all.”

Anyone who has any information or has witnessed the vandalism is asked to contact Cambridgeshire Police on 101 or CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.
