Before you pay your VAT bill, make sure your deadline has not passed. Your deadline will be shown on your VAT return (external link). There are different deadlines if you use:  

• the Annual Accounting Scheme (external link)  

• payments on account (external link)  

• Pay Now (external link)  

There is a different way to pay a VAT Mini One-Stop Shop (VAT MOSS) bill (external link). 

Ways to Pay 

Make sure your payment will reach HM Revenue and Customs’ (HMRC) bank account by the deadline. You may have to pay a surcharge (external link) if you do not pay on time. You can use the VAT payment deadline calculator (external link) to work out how much time to allow. 

Same or Next Day 

• online or telephone banking (external link) (Faster Payments) 

• CHAPS (external link) 

Three Working Days 

• Direct Debit (external link) 

• Bacs (external link) 

• standing order (external link) (only for businesses using the Annual Accounting Scheme or Payments on Account) 

• online by debit or corporate credit card (external link) 

• at your bank or building society (external link) 

If the deadline falls on a weekend or bank holiday, your payment must arrive in HMRC’s bank account on the last working day before it (unless you pay by Faster Payments (external link)).
