You can find your National Insurance number on your payslip, P60, or letters about tax, pensions and benefits. You can also find it through your personal tax account (external link) and download a confirmation letter.
If you still cannot find it, you can either:
- fill in form CA5403 (external link) and send it to the address on the form
- contact the National Insurance numbers helpline (external link) and answer some questions (you will need to fill in form CA5403 if you cannot answer the questions)
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will not tell you your National Insurance number over the phone. They will post it to you and it will arrive within 15 working days.
You do not need a National Insurance plastic card. HMRC no longer sends these cards out.
If you Have Never had a National Insurance Number
You can apply for a National Insurance number (external link) if you have never had one.
