GP SURGERY RENOVATION PROJECT TAKES NEXT STEP FORWARD
Patients who use St Mary’s surgery in Ely will soon benefit from new and improved facilities following the approval of full planning permission to carry out renovation works, and a funding boost.
Through the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), East Cambridgeshire District Council has provided £750,000 worth of funding, which alongside funding from NHS England and support from the Cambridge Community Services and the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), means the long-awaited renovation works can begin.
The GP partners (Drs Young, Piggott, Baker, Miller and Rayner) at the surgery have also played a huge role in the project, each contributing vital funding to allow the works to take place.
From 21st December 2021, the surgery moved into temporary premises at the Princess of Wales Hospital to allow the works to take place.
Councillor Anna Bailey, Leader of East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “The renovation at St Mary’s Surgery in Ely has been a longstanding project and I am really pleased to see that this has been able to take such a big step forward.
“As a Council, we have been a firm supporter of this project since the beginning and are extremely proud that we have been able to make a contribution to the project via CIL funding.
“These works will greatly improve the health provision for residents in the district and I really look forward to seeing this project come to fruition for the benefit of residents in East Cambs.”
The renovation works being carried out will maximise the surgery’s capacity to meet the growing demands on the healthcare system in Ely and surrounding areas while maintaining a presence in the city centre.
Tony Davies, Practice Manager at St Mary’s Surgery, said: “This is a really exciting time for us here at the surgery.
“The works here have been in the pipeline for a considerable amount of time and we look forward to seeing them get underway and more importantly, moving back into our brand new, renovated and specially made space next year.
“We would like to take this time to thank all of our patients for their ongoing support throughout this process as well as all of those organisations involved.
“Without funding from East Cambridgeshire District Council and NHS England and ongoing support from Cambridge Community Services and the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough CCG, this project would not be able to take place.”
Jessica Bawden, Director of Primary Care at the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough CCG, said: “We’re committed to ensuring local primary care services are able to meet the local needs of their communities and are pleased to be supporting the renovation at St Mary’s Surgery.”
The all new St Mary’s Surgery is set to reopen in November 2022.
The full clinical team of doctors, advanced nurse practitioners, nurses, health care assistants and Primary Care Network staff supported by some of the Patient Services Team will move to temporary premises at the Princess of Wales Hospital site, Lynn Road, Ely CB6 1DN. St Mary’s Surgery dispensary team have moved temporarily to No 80 St Mary’s Street.
