Flats with communal bins

If you live in a flat, from June 2026 you’ll benefit from:

  • weekly food waste collections - we’ll send you a kitchen caddy to collect your food waste in your flat, and a large shared food bin in the communal bin area to transfer it into for collection
  • a year’s supply of caddy liners, for free
  • a shared bin for any rubbish that cannot be recycled - these replace your black bin bags which you will no longer receive and will be emptied every fortnight
  • soft plastics like carrier bags, film lids, salad and vegetable packaging can be added to the blue bins for recycling

When and what happens next

We are working to make sure everyone has the right service and bins in time for collections to start from 1 June 2026.

We have been visiting and assessing bin areas of all the flats in the district to ensure there is space for these bins, and that the right number and sized bins are provided. We will be working with the managing agents for these sites to ensure a smooth transition.

In spring next year, you’ll get a full information pack on how to use the service, and if there are any changes to your collection day, we’ll let you know.

Why it's happening

The changes are being brought in as part of a national government initiative across England to help everyone reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and recycle more.
