Work planned for city centre car park

Residents are being advised of a partial closure of Newnham Street car park in Ely to allow resurfacing work to be completed.

East Cambridgeshire District Council has scheduled the work to the car park to begin on Monday 16 March and it is anticipated to last for two weeks.

The free car park will remain open during the works, with sections closed off to allow contractors to resurface areas, allowing residents to still access parking in the city centre car park.

The council is advising residents the early morning restrictions still apply, however, other restrictions like short and long stay times will not be enforced whilst the work is completed, in recognition of the reduced capacity in the car park.

There will be one day of full closure on Monday 30 March to allow for the entrance to Nutholt Lane (by the Highflyer pub) to be resurfaced.

Bill Hunt, district councillor with responsibility for infrastructure, explains: "We appreciate this may not be convenient for residents and we apologise, however, the resurfacing work ensures the car park will operate at its best for all users.

"We feel it is vital we provide easily accessible free parking in our city centre to help boost our local economy and ongoing maintenance ensures this can continue."

Business and residents who are directly affected have been contacted by the contractors to ensure everyone is fully informed in advance of the work.

The planned work will be completed by 1 April, ensuring it is finished ahead of the busy Easter holidays.

Alternative car parks are available in Ely.
