A new Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) aimed at tackling anti-social driving and vehicle-related nuisance has been introduced across East Cambridgeshire.
The Order, enforced from 24 August 2026, has been introduced by East Cambridgeshire District Council in partnership with Cambridgeshire Constabulary following a public consultation.
Designed to address persistent complaints from residents about dangerous and disruptive driving behaviour in public areas, the PSPO will give police and authorised officers additional powers.
Anti-social behaviour including but not limited to excessive speeding, revving engines, racing, wheel spins, sounding horns unnecessarily, and gatherings that cause harassment, alarm or distress to local communities will be tackled with the new Order, covering public roads and spaces across the district.
Anyone breaching the Order could face enforcement action, including receiving a Fixed Penalty Notice and being directed to leave an area.
Councillor Julia Huffer, Chair of the council’s Operational Services Committee, said: "Our residents have made it clear that anti-social driving is having a serious impact on their quality of life. This new Public Spaces Protection Order sends a strong message that dangerous and inconsiderate behaviour will not be tolerated in our district.
“We are committed to working closely with our partners in the police to ensure our public spaces remain safe and welcoming for everyone.”
The introduction of the PSPO follows consultation with East Cambs residents, local businesses, community groups, and partner agencies.
Inspector Simon Birch from Cambridgeshire Constabulary added:
“The majority of motorists use our roads responsibly, but a small minority continue to engage in behaviour that puts others at risk and causes significant disruption to communities.
“The PSPO gives officers additional powers to take action quickly and effectively against those responsible for anti-social driving.”
