Growing communities are to benefit from two new project funds from East Cambridgeshire District Council.
The Local Infrastructure Fund and the Inclusive Play and Open Spaces Fund are opening for applications on Monday 13 April following approval at the district council’s Finance and Assets Committee on 26 March 2026.
The Local Infrastructure Fund has been set up to provide local communities with access to thousands of pounds worth of Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding to deliver new infrastructure required as a direct result of growth. Funds can support new facilities like community centres, village halls, or multi-purpose community sports and leisure centres, or create additional capacity to meet the growing needs of the community.
The second fund launching on Monday 13 April is the Inclusive Play and Open Spaces Fund which will provide CIL funding to meet the capital costs of ensuring playgrounds are accessible to all.
For a project to be successful it must demonstrate that it is necessary to support local growth, a commitment to Net Zero Carbon, resident engagement and a green approach.
Alan Sharp, Chair of the Finance and Assets Committee said: “These two new funds are designed to make applying for funding more accessible than the current Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) criteria, which may be restrictive for some projects.
“The match funding required for each of these funds has been reduced from 50% to just 10%, which makes it easier for many more organisation to apply.
“Additionally, the Inclusive Play fund now has no minimum project cost, removing the criteria for the whole project cost of £50,000. This means smaller projects, that could make a big difference in the lives of children in East Cambs, can now apply for funding.
“The committee unanimously approved the new funds and we would encourage East Cambs communities to apply for their projects.”
Applications for funds can be made at any time, however, all projects must be completed by March 2028.
Organisations will need to submit an application form and applicable supporting evidence to be considered.
