East Cambs community groups urged to apply for grants

Community groups are being encouraged to apply for grants of up to £1000, offered by East Cambridgeshire District Council.

The groups can spend the money on new or existing projects designed to improve the quality of life for residents.

Safe Soulmates, an organisation that creates safe, inclusive spaces for neurodivergent and disabled adults to connect, build friendships and explore opportunities, was one of the successful applicants in a previous funding round.

The grant funding was provided to help the organisation celebrate their 7th birthday at The Maltings in March this year, providing a safe social space for neurodivergent and disabled adults to get together.

Christine O’Neil from Safe Soulmates explains: “The event we held at The Maltings in Ely, made possible through the funding, was a really special and successful evening for our community.

It brought people together in a safe, welcoming space where everyone could relax, have fun, and feel part of something.

“The event showed the strength of our community, with people supporting each other, building friendships, and taking active roles in making the evening a success. It is these moments that really highlight the importance of safe social spaces and the positive impact they have on people’s confidence, connection, and wellbeing.”

Successful applicants in the last round of funding also included the Burwell Cooking Together scheme; All Inclusive Football Coaching for their adult pan disability football sessions; and Star Struck, helping to nurture creativity and confidence among 7 to 17 year olds.

Councillor Julia Huffer, Chair of the Operational Services Committee, said: “Community groups in East Cambs can offer new and existing support and services to residents throughout our district, assisted by this fund.

“We would urge community groups to apply for their projects or events because this could be the extra boost they need to successfully deliver their aspirations in our communities.”

The East Cambridgeshire Community Fund will be open to applications between 11 May to 22 June 2026.

Applying for this grant is simple. Information about the grant including eligibility criteria and application guidance can be found on the council’s website.
