Home safety checklist

Here is a general checklist for you to 'hazard spot', so that you can check your home so that you can try to avoid some of the hazards to prevent accidents or obtain further advice.

If you live in a rented property do not attempt to carry out repairs yourself. See our page on looking after a rented property

Carpets and flooring

Check:

  • carpets and other floor finishes are properly fitted down
  • any loose mats are non-slip on the underside
  • lighting is good at changes in floor level, steps and stairs
  • stairways and landings are protected safely and have handrails
  • if floors, stairs or other parts of the building seem unsafe in other ways

Windows and glazing

Check:

  • windows are child safe
  • you can still get out in an emergency
  • low level glazing is properly fitted with safety glass
  • windows can be opened to improve ventilation

Kitchen

Check:

  • anti-topple brackets and cooker safety guards are fitted where children are present
  • work surfaces are a sufficient height and depth to keep children away from kettles and other hot or sharp objects
  • work surfaces fit close enough to both sides of the cooker to help stop children from reaching pan handles

Fire safety and emergencies

Check:

  • self-closing fire doors, smoke detectors, fire alarms and emergency lighting are fitted, working and maintained. You may be able to get free fire alarms fitted by the fire service
  • a fire blanket is provided in the kitchen area and you know how to use it
  • in a fire, could you leave the building by the front door without using a key and reach a place of safety
  • escape routes, such as stairs and hallways are clear and unobstructed
  • carbon monoxide alarms are fitted as it is poisonous and can kill - read more on our carbon monoxide page
  • furniture is labelled as complying with fire regulations and a warning that 'Carelessness causes fire'
  • people who are young, elderly, have a disability or who are otherwise less able to react to an accident or emergency situation would have their needs met in an emergency

See our pages on fire for further information.

Gas and electrical safety

Check:

  • gas appliances work properly. If there is discolouring around gas fires or the top of water heaters get them safety checked
  • you have you seen the Gas Safety Certificate. In rented properties a landlord should get these for your home each year
  • if any electrical wires trail where they can be damaged, be in contact with water or be a trip hazard
  • none of the electrical sockets are overloaded, get overheated, or give electric shocks
  • wires are not old or damaged as these can lead to electrocution or start fires

Do not attempt any electrical repairs. This is a task for a qualified electrician. If boilers break down they need to be fixed by a qualified gas safety engineer.

See our page on gas and electrical safety for more information.

Damp and mould

There are several factors that can cause mould in the home such as leaks and water damage, poor insulation, poor ventilation, poor heating, and poor drying or cleaning.

See our page on condensation, damp and mould for more information
