A standard Council Tax bill is based upon two adults living in a domestic property.

Discounts are available if:  

  • you are living alone  
  • you or someone you live with has a disability  
  • you or someone you live with is severely mentally impaired  
  • members of your household are disregarded for the purposes of Council Tax, for example, if they are a full-time student

Apply for Council Tax support

If you have a low income from either your earnings or benefits, you can apply for a reduction in your Council Tax bill.  This is known as Council Tax support.

If you are receiving Universal Credit you must apply for Council Tax support via the council.

You can apply for Council Tax support if:  

  • you are on a low income and,
  • are working age with less than £10,000 in savings or capital, such as property, or
  • are pension age with less than £16,000 in savings or capital, such as property

Appeal a decision about Council Tax support

If you are unhappy with a decision that has been made in relation to Council Tax support, you can appeal the decision.
