Rural Settlement List
If your business is located within a rural settlement you may also be entitled to have money off your business rates. Rural settlements are villages within the district which have a population of less than 3000 at 31 December 2023.
The purpose of preparing the list is in relation to business rate relief. In short, you could (if you apply) get rural rate relief if your business is in a settlement as listed. Such rural rate relief means that you won’t pay business rates if your business is in an eligible settlement and either:
- the only village shop or post office, with a rateable value of up to £8,500
- the only public house or petrol station, with a rateable value of up to £12,500
Rural Settlement List consultation
The council is currently consulting on the proposed Rural Settlement List for 2025/2026. You can read more about this on our Current consultations page.
Business rates appeals
The rateable value of business properties is fixed by the Valuation Office Agency.
You can appeal against a decision on the current rateable value of your property by contacting the Valuation Office direct. You will need to check the current rateable value online and challenge this if you think it is incorrect.
