Nature recovery starts on your doorstep. If we each do our bit to give wildlife a helping hand, then we will soon see a reverse in the decline of many of our threatened species.
No matter what size your plot there are many ways we can all help make space for nature.
Hedgehogs
Hedgehogs are a protected species and there are lots of easy things we can all do to help support them.
Our top list includes:
- provide hedgehog access to your garden
- leave out food and water
- create hedgehog homes
- check bonfires before lighting them
- report hedgehog sightings on the BIG Hedgehog Map
More information about how you can help hedgehogs can be found on our hedgehog recovery page
Plant a tree
Once of the best things you can do to support nature and biodiversity is to plant a tree – but make sure it’s the right tree for the right place.
Read our plant a tree page for more information.
Garden for wildlife
Gardening for wildlife is all about taking small steps to encourage nature and biodiversity back into your garden. No matter what size or location of your plot – there is always something you can do to help create natural food sources for birds, insects and small mammals.
Our top tips include:
- digging a pond
- planting a native hedge
- feed the birds
- plant nectar rich plants to attract pollenating insects such as bees and butterflies
- mow lawns less frequently
- build a log pile
- avoid using insecticides or chemicals
