On Monday 7 September 2026, the government announced a review of Local Government Reorganisation. As a result, the decision on proposals for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough has been paused while the review is carried out.
The government also confirmed that local elections will take place in May 2027 on existing council boundaries, this will include district elections for East Cambridgeshire District Council.

The council is committed to working within the timeframes set by national government to deliver Local Government Reorganisation (LGR).
2025
- data teams set up to support development of proposals

2027
- transition teams continue to develop programme for transition
- elections take place to elect councillors to the new 'shadow' unitary authority
- informal and formal engagement in readiness for new unitary authority to go live on 1 April 2028
2028 onwards
- vesting day for new unitary authority (1 April 2028)
- structures continue to be developed
