Reorganisation presents both opportunities and challenges for East Cambridgeshire District Council and its residents.
Benefits include the potential for improved services through more functions ‘under one roof’, clearer accountability for residents, and potential financial savings - which are explicitly expected by the government.
However, there will also be some challenges and changes that LGR will pose for our residents due to the increased size of any new unitary authority compared to the current district council.
For example, residents may see changes to services when the new unitary goes live and a possible increase in Council Tax, which thanks to our innovative and prudent approach to financing, we have been able to keep low for the last 12 years.
We know from our council surveys that access to local services and local councillors is important, as is maintaining our community identity.
Our focus over the next few years is to make sure that any changes which come into effect for the new unitary authority reflect these views and have the best interest of residents at their heart.
In spring 2025 we ran an initial survey to ask residents what is important to them in East Cambridgeshire. Interim results are available on this page.
Public and stakeholder surveys recently ran across the whole county for a six-week period, closing before the end of July. More than 3,000 surveys were completed, and online focus groups also took place.
You can read a press release about these results on our website, Communities thanked for helping shape future of local government
The council is currently running a survey to ask residents their opinion of Option B. It follows a Full Council meeting on 18 September, at which the council agreed it would be supporting the development of the business case for Option B. The council will also continue to consider other options put forward by other councils.
For more information on Option B and to take the short survey, please see our Option B webpage.
We will be engaging more with residents and stakeholders throughout the LGR process.
In the meantime, if you would like to make any specific views known, please email lgr@eastcambs.gov.uk or feel free to engage with local councillors.
The Local Government Association have also created a devolution hub which contains more detail.
