Following the easing of lockdown, East Cambridgeshire District Council will be reintroducing time restriction enforcement in its free car parks from Saturday 1st August.
East Cambridgeshire District Council suspended restrictions during lockdown to allow those undertaking essential trips to do so without the worry of enforcement action.
This suspension also allowed residents to follow the ‘stay at home’ guidance and not need to leave the house to move their car if using the free car parking spaces in the city centre during the COVID-19 lockdown period.
As residents get used to the new normal and get back to work, and as local businesses begin to reopen, the Council has made the decision to reinstate time restrictions on its long and short stay free car parks.
Signs will be in place from the 1st of August in all car parks in the district to remind visitors of the time restrictions that apply.
Car parking restrictions will apply once again from 8 am to 6 pm, Monday to Saturday and early morning restrictions will resume in long stay car parks.
Free long stay car parks in the area include Fisherman's, Newnham Street, Ship Lane, Forehill (Lower Section), Barton Road.
Free Short Stay Car Parks include St Mary's Street, Newnham Street, The Grange (Saturdays and Bank Holidays only), Forehill (Upper Section).
All car parks in the East Cambridgeshire district are no return within two hours.
Cllr David Brown, Chairman of East Cambridgeshire District Council’s Finance and Assets Committee said:
“As we welcome people back to our high streets, our bars, pubs and restaurants our car parks are set to become busy once again.
“As we attempt to return to some sense of normality, it stands to reason that our systems return to how they were before, such as our parking structure.
“The Council strives hard to keep its commitment to providing residents with free parking in its city and town centres and will continue to do so, but with this comes the need for some restrictions on time to ensure that free parking is available for all.
“We urge residents to check the signs that will be visible in the car parks to remind themselves of the restrictions that apply in the car park they are using.”
